Are deformed/ mutated lemons safe to eat?

We have a lemon tree that died several years ago but has sprung up from the root stock. It has predominantly normal fruit on the tree, but the deformed ones look truly alien. Are there any diseases that can kill the main tree and then somehow taint the fruit of the new growth?
