In Spanish imperfect vs preterite is very confusing anyone have any helpful information?

I don't understand when to use imperfect and when to use preterite. My teacher has tried to help, but it almost made it worse. Has anyone had this problem and have good way to understand. Please Help I have a test coming up and final in a month.
