What effect did princess diana's death have on the monarchy?
I don't think there was so much an effect, but more of an impact. Clearly, many of the royals were oblivious to the extent of her popularity and when they saw the mountain of floral tributes to her, realised they had better change their demeanor. You may recall many members of the press complaining "show us you care" on their front pages - jabs at the Queen and Prince Charles for appearing to be unemotional. Perhaps her death allowed a little light in to the soberness of the royal attitude to Diana's death and the effect on her two boys. One thing you have to say for Her Majesty, she can and has, modernized royal outlook, accepting criticism and changing in the face of it. She has never been an outwardly emotional person so we cannot begin to understand how she truly felt. That Prince Phillip and Prince Charles joined Diana's brother and her sons the Princes William and Harry in walking behind her caisson indicated to me that they realised this was something they should do - if they wanted to maintain any kind of credibility in their compion.
