Discuss how the characters in both Candide and the Great Gatsby wander in a world of disillusionment and detac?

You could talk about how each character's fantasy world continues to collide with the reality. Candide always thinks that everything is for the best, but he just goes from one bad situation to another and nothing really has any rhyme or reason. Gatsby has his own rich American dream, but eventually is murdered. In the end, fantasies do not protect us. We learn that, as Candide does, or we die, as Gatsby does.
